Description
St. Stephen's Cathedral in Hvar is one of the island's most important monuments, combining Baroque and Renaissance styles. The building was constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries on the site of an earlier church from the 9th century.
The interior impresses with nine Baroque altars from the 17th century and a triptych by a Venetian artist depicting St. Mary, St. John the Baptist and St. Jerome. In the bell tower, one can admire a Roman bas-relief depicting a 2nd century galleon.
The cathedral towers over the largest square in Dalmatia, which was once a deep bay filled with rocks over the centuries.
