Description
Reconstruction of Viking Village is a fascinating journey back in time to the Viking Age. When you visit this authentic reconstruction, you will see houses built exactly as they were in the Viking Age, using knowledge from archaeological excavations on the island of Björkö.
You can observe the work of craftsmen using original techniques and tools - blacksmiths, comb makers, bronze casters or weavers. It's part of the UNESCO Birka and Hovgården site, illustrating the elaborate trade networks of Viking-era Europe.
For those with a thirst for knowledge, the Birka Museum awaits, with fascinating artifacts discovered during excavations.

Lena Raya month agoWe visited Birka at the very start of the season, so not everything was open yet — the Vikings were busy building a new kitchen roof. Still, it was fun to imagine how they cooked and built things back then. A small pen with goats and chickens, cared for by a barefoot young Viking, made the place feel extra charming and real. The village itself is tiny.
The members of Birka-Hovgårdens Gille wear Viking clothes and really bring history to life. Big thanks to them — they even live here full-time during July!
Birka is Sweden’s first city and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Since the site is small, I recommend coming during festivals in late June or July, when the reenactors are fully active — that’s when it feels most alive.
