Description
National Trust - Fontmell and Melbury Downs is a unique nature reserve near Shaftesbury, offering breathtaking views of Blackmore Vale.
This place is famous for its rich biodiversity - as many as 35 species of butterflies, rare birds and nine species of orchids can be seen here. Adding to the historic character is the fact that there was a warning beacon on Melbury Beacon from the time of the Great Armada (1588), and the 'Clubmen's Down' area was the site of a significant protest during the Civil War in 1645.
The well-maintained trails are accessible to most people, including wheelchair users, making this an ideal place for a family outing.

sonya2 years agoWe just love this place, if you like a really good hike then this is the place for you, many many footpaths, extraordinarily beautiful views, sheep and cows, fabulous birds of prey, we watched 6 red kites below us as we sat up high, just so beautiful. And for an added treat, Compton Abbas airport is next door so the low flying very interesting small planes fly over as they take off.
Mark Johnsona year agoSuperb views of surrounding countryside. Small car park for approx 20 cars leading straight on to pathways. Had a lovely walk with our dog. Saw orchids, cowslips,yellow hammers, sky larks and heard a Tawney owl in the woods. Circular walk back to car park but could go longer down into valley.Related categories
