Description
The Mafra Palace is a monumental complex built between 1717 and 1730 by order of King John V as a votive offering for the birth of his daughter.
This impressive example of Baroque architecture impresses with its 220-meter facade of Portuguese limestone and two 70-meter towers. The interior hides real treasures: a basilica with two carillons and six historic organs, and a library with 40,000 volumes, protected by.... a colony of pest-eating bats!
It's a place where Portugal's history comes alive in every detail - from the elaborate carvings to the richly decorated interiors.
