Description
Ponttor is one of the two surviving medieval city gates of Aachen, built around 1320. This imposing structure of local limestone and sandstone, with twin towers reaching 25 meters in height, is a fascinating example of medieval defensive architecture.
The name of the gate comes from the Latin word 'pons' (bridge), referring to its original location by the moat. Today, Ponttor is used by German scout groups, but still impresses tourists with its monumental structure and rich history.
It is the perfect starting point for exploring Aachen's charming old town with its historic buildings and atmospheric streets.
