Description
The Niccolo Tommaseo Monument is a fascinating monument located in the Campo Santo Stefano square in Venice. Made by Francesco Barzaghi, it commemorates the Italian linguist and journalist, creator of a multi-volume dictionary of the Italian language.
Locals gave it the humorous nickname 'El Cagalibri' (the Shitting Books) because of the unusual placement of the books supporting the marble statue.
The monument, unveiled in 1882, depicts Tommaseo with the works of Dante and Homer, serving as a symbol of Venice's intellectual heritage and an excellent stopping point during a stroll through the historic center of the city.
