Description
The National Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima in Zakopane is a unique religious monument, built as a votive offering of gratitude for saving the life of John Paul II after the 1981 assassination attempt.
The temple impresses with its Zakopane-style architecture with a high stone base and a steep mansard roof topped by a slender turret. The interior is decorated with stained glass windows designed by Stanislaw Witkiewicz.
The shrine houses a statue of Our Lady of Fatima, crowned by Pope John Paul II in Rome in 1987. Fatima Park offers an altar at which the Pope celebrated Mass in 1997 and a monument to John Paul II and Cardinal Dziwisz.
