Description

St. Gertrude's Bastion is a unique monument of military architecture in Gdansk, built between 1607-1638 in the New Dutch style.

It is the only one of Gdańsk's fortifications to retain its original shape, offering a fascinating journey back in time. The casemates, underground corridors and brick rooms, which once served as powder and ammunition stores, now tell the story of the city's defense.

Named after the 1342 hospital of St. Gertrude, the bastion is part of a pentagonal massif with high caissons, once surrounded by a double zigzag-shaped moat.
