Description
Place Des Ecritures is a unique cultural monument in the heart of medieval Figeac. The huge black granite slab is an enlarged replica of the Rosetta Stone, created by American artist Joseph Kosuth in 1990.
It is a tribute to Jean-François Champollion, the famous Figeac-born Egyptologist who deciphered the hieroglyphs in 1822.
The terraced gardens surrounding the installation allude to the land of the pharaohs, creating an extraordinary educational space that combines medieval architecture with the fascinating history of writing and human communication.
