Description
** Holyrood Palace** is a royal residence with a fascinating history dating back to 1128. Originally an Augustinian abbey, it was transformed into a palace in the 15th century and impresses with its Baroque architecture after being rebuilt in the 1770s.
It is a place full of mystery and legends - it is said to be haunted by the ghost of Mary Stuart, who lived here from 1561 to 1567. The palace is home to the Scottish Crown Jewels (Honors of Scotland) - the oldest royal insignia in Britain.
Visitors can explore 17 chambers, including the 17th-century State Apartments and 16th-century chambers in James V Tower.
