Description
The Abbey of the Cistercian Fathers in Szczyrzyc is one of the oldest monasteries in Poland, with a history dating back more than 780 years. Founded in 1234 by Theodor Gryfita, it was moved to Szczyrzyc in 1243 due to the harsh climate and frequent Tartar attacks.
The abbey is famous for its beautiful architecture, the miraculous image of Our Lady of Szczyrzyc and its rich cultural history. In accordance with the Cistercian motto 'ORA ET LABORA' (pray and work), the monks practiced farming and gardening.
There is a museum on the grounds of the monastery with valuable artifacts and documents that provide insight into the fascinating history of the place.
