Description

The Benedictine Abbey of Melk is one of the finest examples of Baroque architecture in Europe. This gem of Austrian cultural heritage impresses with its rich frescoes, impressive library with more than 100,000 books and 1,200 medieval manuscripts.

Founded in the 11th century, the abbey underwent a spectacular reconstruction in the 18th century under the leadership of Abbot Berthold Dietmayr. Benedictine monks still live here today, continuing the centuries-old tradition.

Visitors can admire the church of St. Peter and St. Paul, the monastery museum and the beautiful gardens, which combine Baroque and English styles. The abbey also produces its own wine, which can be purchased as a unique souvenir.

avatarPatrick Tsui2 weeks agoCame to Melk via Vienna on a day tour by train. The site is conveniently walking distance away from the train station with restaurants and cafes in between. Beautiful and grand. This was an important piece to see if you are interested in history. Tour guide is recommended
avatarOlha Danchevska2 weeks agoA very impressive place to visit. The monastery stands out for its scale and beautiful views over the Danube. The library was the highlight for me — a unique atmosphere, ancient books, and stunning frescoes. The church also leaves a strong impression, with its grandeur and attention to detail. The terrace offers a great view — it’s nice to just pause for a moment and take it all in. Everything is well-organized: parking, clear signs, a cafe and a shop. It’s best to visit when there are fewer people — the place feels completely different then.
avatarRoss Chan4 months ago100% recommend! After 40 years of hard work, the abbey was beautifully restored. The exterior was majestic and interior was stunning. During low season, you can only visit the interior via guided tour. But the good thing is there was no queue. The guide was professional, friendly, humourous and informative. Highly recommend as there was a beautiful exhibition inside and balcony with great view.
