Nizwa Fort

Nizwa Fort is an impressive 17th century fortress that is Oman's most visited national monument. The powerful defensive structure with a central tower 36 meters in diameter and 30 meters high was designed to withstand artillery fire.

The fort has 24 cannons on top of the tower and 480 firing holes, which made it extremely difficult to conquer. As you tour the site, you'll discover clever traps, moats and other defensive architecture from the early gunpowder era.

It is a fascinating testament to the strategic importance of the city of Nizwa in Oman's turbulent history.
