Description
Port Meadow is a historic meadow in Oxford that has never been plowed since prehistoric times. Mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, it was given to the inhabitants by Alfred the Great as a reward for defending against the Danes.
It is a place of exceptional biodiversity, with wildflowers, fowl and freely grazing horses and cattle. In winter, when the meadow floods with water, it becomes a paradise for birdwatchers.
History lovers will appreciate the Bronze and Iron Age remains and the 17th century fortifications. It is also the place that inspired Lewis Carroll while writing 'Alice in Wonderland'.
