Mata Jardim José do Canto is an enchanting botanical garden founded in the 19th century by José do Canto, a botanical and horticultural enthusiast.
More than 6,000 plant species from around the world await visitors, including centuries-old camellias, sequoias and endemic species. Walking along the 2-kilometer Salto do Rosal trail, you'll reach a crystal-clear waterfall surrounded by lush greenery.
Don't miss the neo-Gothic chapel of Nossa Senhora das Vitórias and Vale dos Fetos, a valley of ferns with a 'Jurassic' character. Admission: €4 (cash only).

Zoran Vidanovic3 weeks ago6 ⭐s! One would say the most expensive (5€) hike to a random waterfall, I'd say the cheapest ticket to the most serene corner of the island. At 10am two kids and I were the only tourists (and humans) in the park. Yes, in the middle of July 😳. Sequoia trees, magnificent waterfall, birds, a cow or two and above all peace. One of the highlights of our trip
Marko Intihara month agoA very nice park with multiple parts, you can see an old church / chappel, a garden, a very big sequoia tree and one of the most beautiful waterfalls on the island. The entrance fee to the park was 5 eur. From the entrance to the waterfall you walk aprox. 30-40 minutes.
Arnas Radzeviciusa month agoVery underrated. We didn't know about the place when we went to see the lake but we passed by and figured we have a look and we were very pleasantly surprised. The garden is quite large and contains multiple attractions. Super recommended if you plan to visit this side of the island.Related categories
