Description
Ham Street Woods National Nature Reserve is one of the first nature reserves in the UK, established in 1952. This 97-hectare area of deciduous woodland is a remnant of the ancient oak forest that once covered the Weald region.
The reserve is renowned for its rich biodiversity - rare species of butterflies, birds and mammals can be found here, including triangular and silky moths, white admiral butterflies and nightingale and barred warbler birds.
In spring, the woods fill with primroses, anemones and bluebells, while autumn brings a veritable mushroom feast. Three marked trails ranging from 2.5 to 5 km in length are ideal for family walks.
