Description

The Montezuma Castle National Monument is a fascinating archaeological monument that impresses with its five-story, 20-room structure built into limestone rock. Contrary to its name, it has nothing to do with the Aztec ruler Montezuma - it was built by the Sinagua people between 1100 and 1400 AD.

This unique site demonstrates the advanced stonemasonry techniques of the ancient builders. Although you can't go inside the structure (it was closed to the public in 1951), special viewing platforms allow you to admire this architectural marvel.

Also nearby is Montezuma Well, a large karst funnel with the remains of settlements of the same people.
