Description

Pitt Rivers Museum is a fascinating anthropological museum at Oxford University, known for its unique method of display. The exhibits are grouped by function rather than geographic origin, allowing for comparisons between different cultures and eras.

The collection includes more than 500,000 artifacts from around the world, including the famous reduced heads from South America, a totem from North America and a Maori meeting house from New Zealand. The largest exhibit is an 11-meter Haida totem from Canada.

The museum was founded in 1884 by Augustus Pitt Rivers, who donated his private collection of 22,000 objects to the university.
