Description

Monument To The Great Northern Migration is an impressive monument commemorating the mass migration of African-Americans from the US South to the North in the 20th century.

This 15-foot bronze sculpture, designed by Alison Saar, depicts a man with his arm raised and a suitcase, symbolizing travel, dreams and talents.

The monument stands on a mound made of worn-out shoes, highlighting the migrants' long and difficult trek. The surrounding pillars are textured suitcases with patterns inspired by early 20th century ceilings.

It is a place to reflect on an important chapter of American history and the African American experience.
