Description
The Uspensky Cathedral is a majestic Orthodox temple towering over Helsinki.
Its distinctive 13 bulbous domes, red brick walls and golden crosses are an excellent example of Russian sacred architecture.
The interior impresses with a richly decorated iconostasis by Pavel Šiltsov, which separates the nave from the sanctuary. Built in the 19th century, when Finland was part of the Russian Empire, the sobor symbolizes peaceful relations between Finns and Russians.
It is one of the largest Orthodox churches in Western Europe, attracting half a million visitors a year.
