Description

The Tromsø Cathedral is a unique neo-Gothic-style wooden church, which is the only Protestant cathedral in Norway made of wood. Built in 1861 by architect Christian Heinrich Grosch, it impresses with its unique architecture and rich history dating back to 1252.

The interior of the cathedral, which can accommodate 618 people, is decorated with beautiful stained glass windows designed by Gustav Vigeland and a copy of the painting 'Resurrection' by Adolph Tidemand.

It is not only a place of religious worship, but also an important cultural center, hosting concerts and community events.

avatarAnnie Chuie4 months agoWhat a wonderful moment to visit this century wood church in Tromso. I went on Monday but it was closed. But I got to see its night view. Luckily I stayed nearby in town. So I went again on Tuesday. When stepped in to the church, I felt amazed of the building and atmosphere. Peaceful and calm. There was a lady playing old piano. Such beautiful piece and real experience. Thanks for keeping such priceless church.
avatarMichael Rollins5 months agoIt's lovely to see a wooden cathedral, which definitely gives it a different feel to most I have visited. There are some interesting information boards on the back wall that give some insight into the history of the building. Free entry and toilets are available. The only downside is there's no access to the balcony seating, which was a shame as I would have liked to have gotten a closer look at their older organ.
avatarTony Chote5 months agoOur Havila cruise's southbound itinerary includes a 1.5-hour stop with an optional Midnight Concert tour at the Tromsø Cathedral. The concert features three musicians—a pianist, a singer, and a saxophonist—in a lovely cathedral setting. However, the performance is rather slow-paced, and some find it somnolent. Personally, I wouldn't recommend it. I understand there are also daytime performances available. If you are on Havila cruise, I think it is best to utilize the limited time and explore the town rather than this Midnight Concert. Though shops are closed, they leave the beautiful lights on. However,if you stay in Tromso and want to stop by for a visit,I think it worthwhile.
