Erem w Carceri

The emirate of Carceri is a unique hermitage located on the slope of Mount Subasio, just 4 km from Assisi. It is the place where St. Francis regularly went for prayer and contemplation surrounded by a dense forest of old oaks.

In the complex you can see St. Francis' cave, where he prayed and slept, as well as the Devil's Hole, a natural cave associated with the legend of the saint's encounter with a demon.

The hermitage originally consisted of a small 12th-century oratory, which grew over time thanks to an expansion by St. Bernardino of Siena.
