Description
The Melidoni Cave is a fascinating historical monument in Crete, also known as Gerontospilios. The site has a tragic history dating back to 1824, when more than 370 residents were killed during the Cretan Revolution against the Ottoman Turks.
The cave impresses with its impressive geological formations - stalactites and stalagmites that create an amazing atmosphere. The site also has mythological significance, being associated with the cult of Zeus and Talos, the legendary bronze automaton created by Hephaestus.
Inside is the Hall of Heroes with an ossuary containing the remains of the victims of the 1824 tragedy and a small chapel commemorating the event.
