Description
Pointe des Marrons is a poignant memorial site at the foot of Le Morne Brabant mountain, commemorating the escaped slaves who found refuge here in the 18th century.
The centerpiece is the International Slave Route Monument, a granite block carved with the figure of a slave, surrounded by stones symbolizing the countries of origin. Legend has it that in 1835, the Maroons, seeing the police approaching, threw themselves off the cliff, choosing death over a return to slavery.
This UNESCO-listed site combines dramatic history with breathtaking views of the southwest coast.
