Description
Marktbrunnen Marburg is a unique Renaissance fountain that is one of the city's most important historical landmarks.
Founded in 1525 by Elector Albert of Mainz, it commemorates the end of the Peasants' War and Emperor Charles V's victory at the Battle of Pavia.
This three-columned red sandstone structure impresses with allegorical symbols, including a skull and an hourglass reminding us of the consequences of rebellion. Of particular interest is the image of a drunken peasant with a red rooster and the inscription 'O BEDENK DAS END' (Think of the End).
