Description
Mariensäule is a Baroque monument located in the heart of Munich's Marienplatz. This historic column, erected in 1638, commemorates the end of the Swedish occupation during the Thirty Years' War.
At the top of the column is a gilded statue of the Virgin Mary standing on a crescent moon, symbolizing the Queen of Heaven. At the base of the monument you can admire four putti (cherubs) fighting various beasts, symbolizing overcoming adversity: war, pestilence, famine and heresy.
It is an excellent starting point for exploring other attractions in the area, combining architectural beauty with a rich history.
