Description
Los Raqueros is a unique group of four bronze sculptures located on the Paseo de Pereda promenade in Santander. The monument commemorates the children who once dived into the bay, collecting coins thrown in by sailors and ship passengers.
Created by local artist Jose Cobo in 1999, the sculptures tell a moving story of survival and resourcefulness of the young 'raqueros. Their lives have been immortalized in the works of Cantabrian writer José María Pereda.
It is not only a tourist attraction, but also an important part of the city's cultural heritage, prompting reflection on the history and social conditions of the past.
