Description
Senate Square in Helsinki is the historic heart of the Finnish capital, designed by Carl Ludvig Engel in the Neoclassical style.
Surrounded by four iconic buildings: Helsinki Cathedral, the Government Palace, the main building of the University of Helsinki and the National Library, the square impresses with its monumental architecture and symmetry.
A statue of Tsar Alexander II stands in the center, and a unique sound installation 'Sound of the Senate Square' can be heard every day at 5:49 pm. In winter, the square turns into a magical setting with a Christmas market, and in summer it is bustling with café gardens and street performances.
