Description
St. John's Cathedral in Limerick is an impressive example of neo-Gothic church architecture in Ireland. Designed by Philip Charles Hardwick, it impresses with its 81-meter tower - one of the tallest in the country.
Construction began in 1856 and it was consecrated in 1861. Note the contrast between the austere limestone facade and the richly decorated tower and spire.
The interior of the cathedral was renovated in 1893-1894, influenced by St. Chad's Cathedral in Birmingham, and features unique sculptures, including a depiction of Abraham's sacrifice.
