Description
King John's Castle is a fascinating monument of medieval architecture, being one of only three fortresses built by King John.
This unique octagonal castle played a key role in history - it was from here that King John set out to meet with the barons, which culminated in the signing of the Magna Carta in 1215.
The castle was also a prison for King David II of Scotland and a royal hunting lodge. Today you can admire the surviving fragments of the three-story structure and the distinctive buttresses supporting each of the building's eight corners.
