Description
The Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Nicholas in Galway is an impressive example of eclectic architecture with dominant elements of Neo-Renaissance and Neo-Romanesque styles.
Erected between 1958 and 1965 on the site of the former city prison, the cathedral reaches a height of 44.2 meters and was inspired by the Spanish city of Salamanca.
Its consecration took place in 1965 by Cardinal Richard Cushing. As the main church of the Dioceses of Galway, Kilmacduagh and Kilfenora, it is an important point on the map of Ireland's cultural and religious heritage.
