Description
Karlsplatz, also known as Stachus, is a lively square in the heart of Munich. Its history dates back to 1797, when it was named in honor of Karl Theodor, Elector of Bavaria, although residents have always called it Stachus.
A summer fountain, which turns into an ice rink in winter, is the centerpiece of the square. It is surrounded by historic buildings, including the neo-Gothic-style medieval Karlstor Gate and the Palace of Justice.
Beneath the square is the Stachus Passage, one of the largest underground shopping malls in Europe, attracting more than 160,000 people daily with its friendly atmosphere and colorful decorations.
