Description
The Kalan Mosque is a monumental temple in the heart of Bukhara, capable of accommodating up to 12,000 worshippers under 288 domes. Built in the 16th century after earlier destruction, it survived Mongol invasions and Soviet bombing.
Its austere brick architecture in the Persian Four-Iwan style impresses with its simplicity and monumentality. The central courtyard with an octagonal kiosk and an old tree creates an atmosphere of tranquility. Together with the legendary Kalyan minaret, which survived thanks to the admiration of Genghis Khan, it is the spiritual center of the Silk Road.
