Description

The Basilica of St. Vitalis is a jewel of Byzantine architecture in Ravenna, resplendent with its octagonal body and spectacular 6th century mosaics.

Erected between 525 and 547 A.D. for the enormous sum of 26,000 gold coins, it is an excellent example of the fusion of Eastern and Western influences.

The basilica's greatest treasures are the mosaics depicting Christ, biblical scenes and Emperor Justinian and Empress Theodora. As part of Ravenna's ensemble of early Christian monuments, the site is listed by UNESCO.
