Description
Parco Regionale della Murgia Materana is a rugged, limestone landscape with the deep Gravina canyon, where more than 150 rock-cut churches with Byzantine frescoes and prehistoric caves from the Paleolithic era are hidden.
The park protects nearly 1,200 plant species and rare fauna, including falcons, the symbol of the reserve. Trails lead through wild gorges to viewpoints with panoramic views of the Sassi di Matera, and a Tibetan bridge adds an adventurous touch. It is a genuine escape from the tourist crowds.
