Description
Palazzo del Bargello is one of the oldest public buildings in Florence, dating back to 1255. This historic edifice, which served as the seat of the city government, a prison and police headquarters, today impresses with its collection of Italian Renaissance sculpture.
The museum showcases masterpieces by Donatello, Michelangelo and Verrocchio. Especially noteworthy are the beautiful courtyard, the balcony and the great hall on the second floor, which have retained their austere harmony despite numerous alterations.
It is a place that has witnessed important historical events, including meetings of the Council of the Hundred, attended by Dante Alighieri.
