Description
The Saint Gellert Monument is an impressive 23-foot statue located on Gellert Hill in Budapest. The monumental statue commemorates the Italian missionary who died a martyr's death in the 10th century, thrown down by pagans in a barrel studded with spikes.
The monument, designed by sculptor Gyula Jankovits, depicts the bishop with an upraised hand holding a cross. At his feet are two statues symbolizing converted pagans.
The entire structure is surrounded by an arched arcade, and an artificial waterfall has been created beneath the monument, which adds to the unique charm of the place and makes it an excellent vantage point for viewing the Danube and the Pest skyline.
