Description
The Altamira National Museum and Research Center is a unique place where you can admire a precise replica of the famous cave with prehistoric paintings dating back 15-36 thousand years.
The neo-cave recreates the original polychromes with bison, horses, and abstract shapes, created by our ancestors using charcoal and pigments. Discovered in 1879 by Marcelino Sanz de Sautuola and his daughter María, they were initially considered a forgery.
Interactive exhibitions display tools, bones, and artifacts, giving visitors a glimpse into the daily life of the prehistoric inhabitants of Cantabria.
