Description
The Golden Rider is an impressive gilded statue of Augustus the Strong in Dresden, depicting the ruler as a Roman emperor on a climbing steed.
Designed by French sculptor Jean Joseph Vinanche and cast in 1734, this majestic statue survived the turmoil of World War II by being hidden in an underground cave.
It is a symbol of Dresden's cultural heyday under Augustus the Strong, when the city earned the nickname 'Florence on the Elbe'. A walk around the monument is an excellent opportunity to admire the Baroque architecture of the Neustadt district.
