Description
Bramber Castle is a fascinating Norman motte-and-bailey fortress, built in 1070 by William de Braose, shortly after the Norman conquest of England.
The only surviving wall of the three-story stone tower rises 14 meters, giving an idea of the castle's former glory. The site hides the dramatic history of the de Braose family, whose members were imprisoned by King John because of suspected disloyalty.
The high natural hill offers a picturesque view of the Adur River valley, making the site attractive to history buffs and beautiful scenery alike.
