Description
The Lantern Tower of La Rochelle is one of three medieval towers guarding the port of La Rochelle. This unique 12th century structure served as a lighthouse, a prison and a checkpoint for ships entering the port.
The tower impresses with its Gothic spire, which makes it often mistaken for a church tower. From its top you can enjoy a breathtaking panorama of the city and the coast.
The most interesting feature is the walls covered with more than 600 graffiti carved by prisoners, including English buccaneers from the 18th century - a fascinating testament to the region's maritime history.
