Description
The Famine Memorial is a moving memorial to the victims of the Great Famine in Ireland (1845-1852). Six naturalistic bronze sculptures by Rowan Gillespie depict emaciated people in rags, symbolizing the desperate journey of those fleeing hunger and poverty.
The monument is located on the site from which one of the first ships with emigrants set sail in 1846. A replica of Jeanie Johnston's famine ship is moored nearby, a perfect complement to this poignant display.
This is a must-see for those interested in Irish history and its tragic chapter.
