Description
St Mary's Chapel is one of the oldest religious monuments in the Caithness region, dating back to the 12th century. A simple, rectangular building with distinctive features of Nordic architecture, it impresses with its austere elegance and historic atmosphere.
The chapel, though roofless, has almost complete stone walls, and its unique character is emphasized by its lack of windows - a feature rarely seen in medieval buildings. The surrounding cemetery, still in use, contains seven tombstones, the oldest of which dates back to 1692.
The site holds many secrets, including a nearby sacred spring known as St Mary's Well and traces of Pictish settlement.
