Description

Southwick Priory is a fascinating monument of medieval architecture, founded by King Henry I in 1133. Originally located within the walls of Portchester Castle, it was moved to Southwick around 1145-1153.

Today you can admire the surviving parts of the walls with a well-preserved medieval portal, buttress and foundations. The site was visited by notable personalities, including Henry VIII and Margaret of Anjou.

Surrounded by picturesque woodland, the ruins offer a unique combination of history, spirituality and nature, ideal for lovers of medieval history and peaceful walks.

avatarLesley Andersona year agoLovely historic place. Tucked away in the village of Southwick. Hampshire. If I hadn't been walking past the entrance I would have missed it as its just an iron gate. Pathway is well maintained and leads you round past two huge ponds where we spotted a heron, onto the ruins itself. Only one wall is standing but it's well preserved. There was also a sign which says you can now do a circular walk around the golf course so one to try next time. Also a bonus is seeing the red wood tree so that must have been planted when the monks were there. So if anyone wants to visit the old priory ruins, head into southwick village and follow road heading towards southwick golf course. Park in d day memorial hall car park. Head back across the road and look for the iron gate which will take you to the ruin wall..
avatarVinny 13332 years agoA little struggle to find it but if you park in the carpark behind the Gold Lion pub which is free. Head back out of the carpark & there is a small gate opposite. New fencing & gate put up inside. Not much to see just a wall but if you like history worth a visit.
avatarJarrod Hunt4 years agoAbsolutely no signage leaving up to the site, just one sign the other side of a gate, so you might struggle to find it. Very little to see, just one wall, bit it is a lovely walk through the trees to get to it.
