Shrine of Remembrance

Shrine of Remembrance is an impressive war memorial in Melbourne, inspired by Greek architecture including the tomb of Mausolus and the Parthenon. This majestic structure was built to honor Australians who served in World War I, and now commemorates all who fought in any armed conflict.

The most fascinating feature is the ray of sunlight that falls through a special hole in the roof on Memorial Day (November 11), illuminating the word 'Love' in the inscription "Greater love hath no man. Beneath the shrine is a crypt with a bronze statue of a soldier with his son, and panels listing each unit of the Australian Imperial Force.
