Description
The Roman Amphitheater of Lecce is a fascinating monument dating back to the 1st-2nd century AD, discovered by accident only in 1901 during construction work.
This impressive amphitheater could hold up to 14,000 spectators and was the site of gladiatorial battles and public ceremonies.
Carved directly into the rock, with 68 arches (24 of which are still visible today), it is an excellent example of Roman engineering.
Today, the amphitheater is a venue for cultural events and concerts, and hosts a Christmas nativity scene in winter. Its nocturnal atmosphere, without artificial lighting, takes you back to ancient times.
