Description
The papal palace in Avignon is one of the most important monuments of Gothic architecture in Europe.
This monumental building was the seat of seven popes between 1309 and 1377, during the period known as the 'Avignon captivity'. The palace consists of two main parts: The Old Palace (Palais Vieux) and the New Palace (Palais Neuf), both of which impress with their wealth of architectural detail.
The UNESCO-listed site attracts more than 600,000 tourists annually. Visitors can admire the impressive apartments, chapels, courtyards and the famous Consistory Hall, where important historical events were held.
