Description

Whitby Abbey is a fascinating historical monument located on a cliff overlooking the North Sea. This former Benedictine monastery, founded in 657, witnessed the pivotal Synod of 664 that shaped the history of the Church of England.

The site inspired Bram Stoker to write his famous novel 'Dracula'. The atmospheric ruins dating back to the 13th century and the 199 steps leading up to St. Mary's Church create an unforgettable experience.

In the museum on the abbey grounds, you can admire artifacts from archaeological excavations while learning about the lives of the monks and nuns who once inhabited the site.

avatarmaria coleman4 weeks agoStunning piece of history located on the headland, the sea making a lovely backdrop. It is an English heritage site, so free entry for members. Staff friendly at the entrance. Electronic guided devices are available which I like to do, they are informative. There is a cafe and gift shop and toilets. Car parking is available very close by, it is pay and display, Enjoyed my visit, the ruins are stunning and impressive. Would definitely visit again.
avatarJim Wildea week agoGreat views of the town and beyond. Nice cafe adjacent to shop and museum. An easy walk around the grounds once you have negotiated the climb to the top
avatarPatrick Xua month agoThe main attraction in Whitby, our day tour's highlight. The architecture is magnificent and stunning. The views of the harbor were spectacular. The 199 steps were not so hard to climb, as the rise of the steps are pretty low, the actual elevation is probably under a hundred meters.
