Description
The Arch of Sergius is an impressive ancient Roman triumphal arch from the 1st century BC, and is one of the best preserved monuments in Pula.
Built between 29-27 BC by Salvia Postuma to commemorate three members of the Sergius family. It impresses with its Corinthian style with Hellenistic influences and rich decorations - sculptures of winged victorias, an eagle-snake fight and bas-reliefs depicting military equipment.
The arch inspired many artists, including Michelangelo himself, who admired its artistry and made sketches of it during his travels.
