Description
Lewes War Memorial is an impressive monument commemorating 251 Lewes residents killed in World War I and 126 victims of World War II.
Designed by Vernon March, the monument impresses with its craftsmanship - the Portland stone obelisk is topped with a bronze statue of a winged Victoria, holding a laurel wreath and looking toward the fields of Flanders.
At the base are two bronze sculptures: seated Liberty with a torch and Peace with a dove on her shoulder. The monument is not only a symbol of remembrance, but also a unique work of sculptural art.
